Jati luwih

Jatiluwih was recently listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its preservation of traditional Balinese farming techniques.

Jatiluwih is one of places to visit in Bali with the beautiful view as according to its name from Jati and luwih, where Jati mean really and Luwih meaning especial, good, and beautiful or the equivalent.

Jatiluwih is surrounded by cool atmosphere because it is located in the height of 700 meters above sea level. Besides its nature potency, Jatiluwih is also saving the cultural potency, especially history of the Petali Temple existence that is related to the power of Ida Dalem Waturenggong King in Keraton Gelgel (1460 - 1552). The distance from Denpasar to Jatiluwih is about 48 km and it is situated in upstate of Tabanan town (28 Km).

Jatiluwih is a favorite tourist destination in Bali famous with the beautiful rice terrace unfolding from the foot of mountain until the coastal side.

The local paddies are planted in this place look typically of the high relative size plant if it is compared with other pre-eminent paddy planted by most farmers in Bali . Despitefully, Jatiluwih also famous with its organic agriculture system due to the location is located in the in the plateau of Watukaru Mount which is suitable for the agriculture development.

The road to this place has been progressively improved so that motor vehicle can enter from east side through Pacung Village and go to Jatiluwih and also from the west side from Watukaru Temple pass to Jatiluwih. Jatiluwih is many visited by tourist from local and foreign countries who want to enjoy the cold atmosphere and beautiful panorama of rice terrace. Jatiluwih as a nature tourist destination in Bali which has been recognized since Dutch colonial build the Security Headquarter and until now the local residents conceives with the Dutch Tangs. Indonesian government has assigned the Jatiluwih to be a Tourist Destination Village because of this potency.
Other Unique

Jatiluwih also keep the unique religious ceremony attraction which is famous know as Patirtaan in Petali Temple on Wednesday Kliwon Ugu (Based on Balinese Calendar). The local residents believe that Petali Temple is a worship center of The Hyang Widhi Wasa (the God) as agriculture power. Beside of Petali Temple , there is also Pucak Rsi Temple is located in this area. As a tourist object, Jatiluwih provides the public facilities like parking area, toilet, resting bale and Wantilan for tourist who is enjoying the beautiful panorama. Some restaurants have been built to serve the food and beverage. Watukaru Tour is an exciting tour to visit Watukaru Temple and other tourist destinations like Jatiluwih.

From an elevated vantage point the natural beauty of this area appears to have been created by a higher force. It is as if the shade of emerald green from a painter’s palate has been generously spread over the land. Towards the south there are slight tinges of Blue Ocean, while the opposite direction reveals clear outlines of the Agung and Batukaru Mountains in a majestic stance of silent wisdom. The prevailing ambience is one of peace with cool pockets of air bringing a refreshing change from the oppressive tropical heat of Bali’s south.

The glorious ridges of Jatiluwih have always been an artists’ dream; a place to reflect the gift of nature bestowed by the Gods and where one can create in solitude Bali’s most famous expatriate artist was Walter Spies who lived in Ubud during the 1930’s and he would often visit the picturesque fields of Jatiluwih. Later in his studio he would record his impressions of these exotic views with magical brush strokes upon canvas. Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias in his book entitled ‘Island of Bali’ also narrated the precious beauty of the Balinese landscape as the first classical introduction to the island and its culture. These splendid writings perhaps precipitated the gradual flow of visiting artists in the ensuing years that came seeking inspiration.

The agricultural community in Jatiluwih has more or less remained untouched by the impact of tourism. Instead many villagers seem to maintain a simplistic lifestyle that concentrates on the continual cycle of harvesting their crops and their strong faith in the Hindu religion. There are frequent ceremonial rituals prepared by each family of farmers to express their gratitude to the Gods for the provision of earth, water and all of nature’s components that allow mankind to exist.

The process of growing and harvesting rice is just one fragment of the unique Balinese culture that is guarded by the Goddess Dewi Sri. It is a culture that signifies a customary way of life where rice and all of its stages of process is a powerful driving force behind all form of activity within the community. Food, medicine, art, hope and the ideologies that exist within the village are all directly related to the rice field. The Goddess Dewi Sri symbolizes fertility and prosperity as well as the cycle of human life. The practice of planting rice, maintaining the crop and harvesting is a definite parallel to the full circle of life from birth until death. In Bali there is a real relationship between man and the environment, which follows the Hindu philosophy of maintaining a harmonious balance between all living things to appease the Gods as well as unseen entities.

A day trip is highly recommended as it enables visitors to observe the realities of rural Bali. The opportunity to wander through the fields and watch the birds as they attempt to pilfer rice grains from immature stalks is an enriching experience. Another interesting aspect is the organized irrigation system where farmers share water in a tradition that dates back centuries and has united generations of farmers in their common need for this highly valued resource.

Goa Gajah, the Elephant Cave

The temple was rediscovered by Dutch archaeologists in 1923. The temple is located about two kilometres southeast of Ubud.Goa gajah means” Elephant Cave,”but there were never any elephants on Bali. The cave probably takes its name from the face over the cave entrance might resemble an elephant or perhaps takes from the nearby Sungai Petanu, which at one time was known as Elephant River. The cave is carved into a rock face and you enter through the cavernous mouth of a demon. The gigantic fingertips pressed beside the face of the demon push back a riotous jungle of surrounding stone carvings.Inside the T-shaped cave you can see fragmentary remains of the lingam, the phallic symbol of Hindu god Shiva, and its female counterpart the yoni, and statue of Ganesha.

Lake Batur Bali

Danau (lake) Batur is the largest of Bali’s 4 mountain lakes, with a length of 8km and a width of 3km. Danau Batur sits inside the massive 13km long caldera (crater) which also contains Gunung (mount) Batur (1717m).

As the largest lake in Bali, Danau Batur is sacred to the Balinese, with the Goddess of the Lakes, Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu, honored at Pura Ulun Danu Batur which is on the crater rim. The original temple was at lakeside, but was moved, together with the village of Batur in 1926 after an earthquake. Around the lake, which are fed by 11 springs which the Balinese believe supply many other springs in Bali.

Danau Batur lies 500m below the crater rim. Villages that circle the lake are called ‘bintang danu’ which means ’stars of the lake’. Access to the lakeside from the crater rim is via Penelokan. The winding road drops and gives some nice views of the lake and the surrounding areas. At first it seems surreal to be inside a massive volcanic crater, next to a freshwater lake and seeing people farming crops at the edge. The 3km drive takes no time at all and arriving at lakeside you have 2 immediate options for accommodation, go right to Buahan and the Hotel Baruna, or turn left towards guest houses close to Kedisan. Toya Bungkah, the main trekking point has more accommodation options and is around 4-5km past the junction to the NE.

It is possible to take a public bemo bus from Penelokan to lakeside. These bemos will go as far as Songan, though not frequently. Better to aim for Toya Bungkah. Bemos will also take you as far as Abang on the SE edge of the lake. For people wishing to get to the Bali Agavillage of Trunyan, accessible only by boat, you can get the best deals from Abang, rather than the main boat area at strong>Kedisan. Driving around inside the Batur crater it is easy to get disoriented for a couple of reasons. Firstly, if you are reading from a guide book you will read about things on the edge of the crater rim, edge of the lake, inside the crater and around the mountain. Important to remember which object the book is referring to. Secondly, its not until to start exploring the inside of the crater that you realize there are 2 crater rims, one inside the other, on the western and northern sides.

•Kedisan:
Kedisan offers a few places to stay including:

– Hotel Segara
(0366)51136
Budget to medium place with a choice of rooms, some with hot water and TV. Other rooms have cold water. The altitude means nights are cool so you don’t really need AC.

– Hotel Surya
(0366)51139
Slightly cheaper than the Segara, and there are hot water rooms available, though nothing fancy.

The deal with all the places located on the main road at lakeside is the peace and tranquility, which would otherwise be wonderful, are shattered about once every 2 minutes for 18 hours a day. A quarry on the western side of the lake has yellow dump trucks driving in an out and there is no let up during the day / evening.

Both the Segara and the Surya offer transportation from Kuta, Ubud, Lovina and other places for around 150,000rp. You’ll have to call and check on the latest prices. In my opinion it would be way better to hire a car and driver, since the rental for a day might be 150,000rp and you’ll have local transport once there.

•Toya Bungkah:
Toya Bungkah is located on the NW side of the lake and is the main staging area for mountain trekking. It is 8km from Penelokan and 5km from Kedisan. At lakeside between Kedisan and Toya Bungkah is Pura Jati, which honors the god Wisnu. Every 5 years a huge ceremony happens called the Bakti Pekelem, in which many animals are drowned in the lake to honor Dewi Danu (Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu).

Toya Bungkah has natural hot springs (open daily 8am-5pm), which require an entrance fee of $5. There is a belief that these holy spring are part of a trinity with 2 other spring. Balinese people believe the gods occupy the mountains, the people occupy the valleys and the demons occupy the ocean. The 3 springs, Tirta Bungkah (Holy waters from the mountain), Tirta Empul (Holy waters from the valley) and Tirta Selukat (Holy waters from the ocean) provide a healing bath for the sick, who will visit each one. Toya Bungkah has affordable accommodation, a wartel and some internet access, but don’t expect too much. There are several guest houses and a few places to eat.

•Songan:
The village of Songan contains possibly the oldest temple in Bali, Pura Ulun Danu Batur (same name as the one on the crater rim). As with Pura Jati, ritual drowning of animals occurs in honor of goddess Dewi Danu, this time once every decade. Directly behind the temple is a path leading up the side of the crater rim. The hike up is fairly easy, taking only 10 minutes. At the top are scattered small villages and view of the north coast. Pleasant hiking is found there and it is possible to hike around the crater rim clockwise passing Trunyan. You can even hike north (anti-clockwise) towards the village of Blandingan. This whole area is lovely, with orange groves and forests.

The downside are the piratical Association of Mount Batur Trekking Guides who reside inside the Batur crater. If they happen to spot a tourist hiking up the trail to the rim unaccompanied (and without handing over money) a nasty scene occurs involving shouting and threats of violence. If you want to explore the rim of the crater, its best to check out the temple at Pura Ulun Danu Batur, then turn around and drive out of the crater and around to Blandingan. Basically the Association of Mount Batur Trekking Guides try to control every aspect of hiking inside the crater, but there’s not much they can do outside of it.

•Abang:
Abang is a pleasant little pace to visit. Located on the SE shore of the lake, its residents earn a living by faring and fishing. People are quite friendly and will chat. Some guide books say there is a path from Abang to Trunyan. My experience on a motorbike was not being able to get past the village, but local boats are cheap to hire.

•Trunyan:
Trunyan is the Bali Aga village that seems the most secretive. Maybe its the location, perched on the isolated bank of a mountain lake inside a volcanic crater. The Bali Aga (original Balinese) shunned the new Hindu culture brought to Bali in 1343 by the Majapahit empire from Java. They have their own temples and there is a lot of cross over between what they and the regular Balinese observe. People are drawn to visit Trunyan because of the aura, rather than the substance. In practice Trunyan is a rundown place, with a small temple and has become a tourist trap. As soon as your boat lands people are blocking your way asking for money. The big thing some people come to see is the graveyard, located 15 minutes north by boat. The bodies are wrapped in a cloth and left above ground. Once again locals will block your path demanding money so you may want to give this place a miss. Probably the best way to deal with Trunyan is to enjoy the boat ride there from Abang, nap some photos from the boat and not expect too much else.

•Trekking:
Trekking Gunung Batur is the big draw of the whole area. Its a natural thing to want to do as the mountain commands attention. Its stark and imposing, sitting next to the lake. Getting to the summit to watch the sunrise, before the clouds roll in is what most people want and the guides pus this also. Back in the early 1990’s the whole trekking scene was a lot more relaxed, with guises offering their services for a small fee. Nowadays the Association of Mount Batur Trekking Guides has taken over and operates a cartel, banning other locals from acting as guides and intimidating tourists with threats of violence if they try to hike without one. People with cars will be advised to hire someone to ‘watch their car’ while they are hiking (you can tell from that what kind of place this is).

Gunung Batur is an active volcano and the locals will put eggs in between cracks in the rock to steam them. The 2-3 hour hike up is best done in the dry season (April - November) as footing maybe be difficult in the wet season. Although the mountain air will feel chilly in the morning, 5 minutes after you start hiking you’ll be sweating. Bring a spare t-shirt, a sweater, good boots, plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen.

There are a different routes to choose from:

– Short route:
Drive to Serongga and hike and hike for 30 minutes to an hour to the summit of Batur I.

– Medium route:
Start from Toya Bungkah, hike 2-3 hours to Batur I, around the rim and come down via another route.

– Long Route:
Hike up from Toya Bungkah to Batur I, hike around the rim to the western side, then hiking to Batur II & III. Finish by hiking down to Toya Bungkah or Yehmampeh. This will take 8 hours.

Association of Mount Batur Trekking Guides (0366) 52362, has 2 offices, one at Pura Jati and another in Toya Bungkah. Prices are 300,000rp per guide (max 4 people), 450,000rp for the medium route and 600,000rp for the long route. In hours of darkness it is advisable to take a guide, but on this mountain you cannot hike anywhere during the day without one. Climbing Batur is an okay experience, which would be a lot better without the heavy commercial pressure from locals.

Exploring the Batur Crater:
One of the most enjoyable parts of staying inside the Batur crater is exploring on your own during the day. With a car or motorbike you will be able to stop and chat with villagers, who are mostly friendly. In the NW part of the crater are huge lava fields and orange groves. With the lake right there its a tranquil setting.

In the area of the strait north of Nusa Penida, the pattern is relatively simple, with a flow, at peaktide, of about three-and-one-half knots. Besakih Temple

Bali's mother temple stands against a stupendous mountain backdrop on the southeastern slopes of Mount Agung. The largest on the island, this massive complex of 35 small temples attracts staggering numbers each year, being the main point of pilgrimage for Balinese Hindus. Tracing its origins to prehistoric times, the complex was untouched by the great 1963 eruption of Mount Agung, which wiped out surrounding villages. The complex also houses the oldest remaining gamelan instrument in Bali called selonding. The temple ceremony (odalan) falls on the 10th month of the Balinese calendar, in April.Information by Wcities

Goa lawah (bat cave)

Goa Lawah means ‘bat cave‘ in Balinese, and in Bali, Goa lawah is a famous tourist attraction, as well as a place of religious importance to the Balinese people. The temple was founded in 1007, by Empu Kuteran. Though the temple is small, it is considered very auspicious and is one of the 9 kayangan jagat (directional temples) that protect Bali from evil spirits. The temple at Goa Lawah protects Bali from the SE. Balinese people often stop when driving along thius part of the coast, to give offerings. This is the case all over the island. On special days, raod side shrines may attract a large crowd of Balinese, dressed in ceremonial gear, stopping on their way to a major temple, to give offerings and pray. The parking area and souvenir sellers are in front of the temple, which itself is quite small. There is a 11 tier meru inside, donating its importance, but the actuall temple is quite small. It is possible to visit Goa Lawah during ceremonies, and I managed to get inside to watch people giving offerings and praying. The cave itself is in the rear of the temple, up against the cliff. Inside are hundreds of fruit bats and legend has it that the cave extends all the way underground Pura Goa, at Besakih temple 30 kms away. The cave is the dwelling of Balinese naga, Basuki. Bearing in mind the people at Tirtaganga believe the waters of the Ganges (in India) flow through there, I’d take that with a pinch of salt. •Location of Goa Lawah: Goa Lawah is located on the main road between Kusamba and the turn off for Padangbai. Its on the mountain side of the coastal road and you will notice a parking area, souvenir vendors and tourists milling around. •Getting to Goa Lawah: From Kuta take the Bypass to Sanur, lookout for the sweeping turnoff to the right, just north of Sanur, that heads along the coast to Kusamba. The driving time will be 1.5 -2 hours, depending on how the traffic is in the Kuta area. At the end of the ever-extending coastal highway, you’ll turon off towards Klungkung, before swinging back towards the coastal road that goes to Candi Dasa. •Opening hours: Goa Lawah is open to the public daily, from 7am-6pm. The price 3,000rp. There is a parkirman taking payment for parking, 500rp. Sarongs can be rented for around 1,500rp. •What is there to do at Goa Lawah?: One can take photos of the temple, wander insdie, if you are appropriately dressed in sarong and sash, and buy souvenirs. I have in the past, at Besakih temple, received blessings with a group of Balinese people. This is probably also possible, but don’t charging in there by yourself. Across the street, next to the beach is a garden / picnic area, with views of the islands (Nusa Penida etc.). •Where to stay at Goa Lawah: Your reasons for being on the raod that passes Goa Lawah in the first place are; getting to East Bali and returning from East Bali. People usually don’t look to stay at Goa Lawah and keep going another 7kms to padangbai, or 17kms to Candi Dasa, where you’ll find plenty of choice in places to stay. •What to wear at Goa Lawah: Sarong and sash. Best to pick up a cheap one in Kuta art market, then you can visit temples on your trip around Bali. Rental is cheap too. •Where to eat at Goa Lawah: Vendors sell drinks and the usual snacks outside including grilled corn. There’s no warungs or McDonalds handy though, so your best best is to head to Padangbai, if that is your final destination, or carry on to Candi Dasa, if you are going further east. •When to come to Goa Lawah: The best time to visit Goa Lawah is during the odalan, the temple birthday, or any major Balinese festival, when the temple will be busy due to its importance. Balinese temples are often shabby and bare looking. Its only during a ceremony, that a temple comes to lifes with sounds, singing, offerings, and dancing.

Trunyan, The Baliaga Village

Trunyan is another ancient village inhabited by people who call themselves the “Bali Aga” or old Bali who live in ways that are vastly different from other Balinese. The Bali Aga's temple in this village is named Puser Jagat, meaning Navel of the Universe. Its architecture is highly unusual, and stands in the protective shade of a massive banyan tree. The Bali Aga has a strange way of burial. Instead of cremating their corpses, the Bali Aga simply places them under this banyan tree. The odor is mysteriously masked by a special arboreal fragrance emitted by the banyan tree. The village of Trunyan is squeezed tightly between the lake and the outer crater rim of Batur, an almighty volcano in Kintamani. This is a Bali Aga village, inhabited by descendants of the original Balinese, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century. It is famous for the Pura Pancering Jagat temple, but unfortunately visitors are not allowed inside. There is also a couple of traditional Bali Aga-style dwellings, and a large banyan tree, which is said to be more than 1,100 years old. At Kuban sub-village close to Trunyan is a mysterious cemetery that is separated by the lake and accessible only by boat, there is no path along the steep walls of the crater rim. Unlike the Balinese people, Trunyan people do not cremate or bury their dead, but just lay them out in bamboo cages to decompose, although strangely there is no stench. A macabre collection of skulls and bones lies on the stone platform and the surrounding areas. The dead bodies don't produce bad smells because of the perfumed scents from a huge Taru Menyan tree growing nearby. Taru means 'tree' and Menyan means 'nice smell'. The name of Trunyan was also derived from these two words. The women from Trunyan are prohibited from going to the cemetery when a dead body is carried there. This follows the deeply rooted belief that if a woman comes to the cemetery while a corpse is being carried there, there will be a disaster in the village, for example a landslide or a volcanic eruption. Such events have been frequent in the village's history, but whether women had anything to do with it is a matter of opinion.

Sangeh Monkey Forest

It is located near to Sangeh village; the renowned 6 hectares of Bali Sangeh Monkey Forest are filled with giant nutmeg trees capable of growing as high as 40m. Sangeh Monkey Forest near the village of Sangeh, in southwestern Bali, has six hectares of forestland with giant nutmeg trees. The main attractions here are the hordes of funny yet wise Balinese monkeys inhabiting both the trees and the temple, Pura Bukit Sari, found in the heart of the forest. The monkeys of the forest are believed to be sacred and indeed will approach anyone paying respects at the temple. But visitors should be aware that these monkeys are attracted to shiny objects, so cameras and jeweler should be left behind or kept well hidden under clothes or in a bag when exploring Sangeh Bali. Near Sangeh village, about 20 km north of Denpasar. This forest of approximately 6 hectares is filled with giant nutmeg trees that can grow up to 40m high. The main attractions are the hordes of Balinese monkeys that inhabit the trees and the temple, Pura Bukit sari, located in the heart of the forest. The temple, Pura Bukit Sari, was originally built around the 17th century as an agricultural temple and has been restored several times, most recently in 1973. In the central courtyard, a large statue of Garuda, an old carving of uncertain date, symbolizes freedom from suffering and the attainment of amerta, the elixir of life. The forest of nutmeg trees in which it lies was presumably planted deliberately a long time ago, for it is unique in Bali.

Tirta gangga

Seven km northwest of Amlapura (20 minutes). The turnoff is just one-half km beyond the bridge after leaving Amlapura. One of the prettiest places in Bali, Tirtagangga ("Water of the Ganges") is a well-maintained pool complex built by the last raja of Karangasem, Raja Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut, in 1947 with corvee labor on the site of a sacred spring emerging from under a banyan tree. The site of a small water temple, these formal, almost Italian-style water gardens were one of the old raja's weekend retreats. With its shallow pools and channels, pleasant cool weather (500 meters above sea level), few mosquitoes, great beauty, quiet star-filled nights, and birds chirping over the constant sound of splashing water, Tirtagangga is perfect for relaxation. Sitting on the slopes of Gunung Agung, the open-air palace's fabled water basins, fountains, bizarre statues, and figures have been repeatedly damaged by earthquakes. Locals and the government are involved in a seemingly ceaseless restoration project. Open daily 0700-1800. It's a sublime experience to swim laps in big flower-strewn pools filled from freshwater mountain streams. Pools are drained on Monday mornings, but are completely filled again by afternoon. You can come and go all day to use 45-meter-long pool and the lower pool. The water is spine-tingling cold, so wait until noon to plunge in. After 1800 swimming is free of charge, but the water is too cold. This area has fantastic scenery. It's a nice walk following the water source of the pools. Take a dip in the pool when you return. Climb the hill in back of the water palace for about 1.5-km to the village, where locals host the occasional secret cockfight. Come back via the winding road through the valley: see coconut palms, brilliant rice fields, the distant sea, with Bali's biggest and most sacred mountain towering above. Three km west of Tirtagangga is Puncak Sari with a panorama over rice fields. Another superlative walk is the path leading uphill to Tanahlingis and Ababi. Tanahlingis is known for a choral group peculiar to Karangasem that rhythmically imitates 'gamelan' instruments. Ababi's attraction is a big washing place with walls of brick in a dry riverbed. Getting Away It's easy to get 'bemo' into Amlapura (20 minutes). They run until 1700. For Singaraja, buses call on Tirtagangga starting at around 0900, doing the 92-km three-hour run. Red 'bemo' also pass from 0400 to 1600 (three to four hours). To visit Kintamani from here, take the 'bemo' to Kubutambahan (three hours), then go south one hour to Kintamani. For Candidasa, you can also use 'bemo'. History: The garden of the water of Tirtagangga was constructed in 1948 by the king of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem. This garden of the water was constructed in a very unique architecture of Balinese and Chinese styles. Location: Tirtagangga is located in the village of Ababi, districto of Abang. It is near 83 kilometers of Denpasar and to 6 kilometers of Amlapura to the north. tirta gangga baliFacility: The facilities available in this area are small hotels, small restaurants and the food is clogged, stores of the art and a portion of the parking area. Description: The garden of the water of Tirtagangga scratches in an area of 1,2 hectares, that consists of three complexes. Sukawati art market

Spending a nice holiday on the island of Paradise is full of endless experience. This tiny island has so many treasures and challenging adventure to explore. See the unique rice terraces in Tegalalang or Jatiluwih with its serenity and beauty on the rice fields. Or follow and inhale fresh air along the rapid on the river with a wide choice of different rapid. Another activity you will enjoy is an original "shopping adventure" to hunt souvenirs and the like in the art market. One of art markets that are already popular among visitors is Sukawati art market. Sukawati road-facing market located in the Gianyar Regency has a strategic position as it is passed through during the tour to some destinations to the east. Sukawati art market is close to the village of Celuk, the center of gold & silversmiths. You can drop in after watching barong and kris dance performance in the morning. It can be accessed through bemo transport, tour bus or taxi. It is just like a myriad of art shops that offers wide range of products. Simply one stop-shopping. Many items sold in Kuta or other areas originate from here and are considerably cheaper if bought here. One outlet may provide more than one item, like garments, souvenirs, paintings (unframed), basketry, colorful kites and so on. Buying giveaways to commemorate the holiday has to be a must. So take advantage the holiday time to find out something memorable on the art market of Sukawati. This market is very unique as it is already open in the early morning and visited by both domestic and foreign visitors. It is very close to other destinations in the Gianyar Regency. A good place to explore the shopping experience in a natural way, get in touch with common people and see how the locals go about the art of negotiation. Yes, shopping is also an art of experience. On the one hand, you may enjoy many kinds of art products all in one spot. It reflects the diversity of local art and crafts and the creativity of its people. You will get a new experience in the 'art of buying'. You must bargain the price eventhough the vendor offers you a "morning price." Meaning especially low, to start off the trading day with a few sales already and make the day a successful one. It does not mean you have to accept it as it is, it's not a fixed price. If you are good at bargaining you will get the best price you can afford and the vendor keeps "smiling and thanking you". If they don't smile anymore, you know his cost is higher than your offer. Good at bargaining is a bit more than insisting on a price. You need to provide a logical reason why your offer is so low and still should be accepted.

Ubud

Ubud is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali in Ubud District, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. One of Bali's major arts and culture centres, it has developed a large tourism industry.

Ubud has a population of about 8,000 people, but it is becoming difficult to distinguish the town itself from the villages that surround it.
History

8th century legend tells of a Javanese priest, Rsi Markendya, who meditated at the confluence of two rivers (an auspicious site for Hindus) at the Ubud locality of Campuan. Here he founded the Gunung Lebah Temple on the valley floor, the site of which remains a pilgrim destination.

The town was originally important as a source of medicinal herbs and plants; Ubud gets its name from the Balinese word ubad (medicine).

In the late nineteenth century, Ubud became the seat of feudal lords who owed their allegiance to the king of Gianyar, at one time the most powerful of Bali's southern states. The lords were members of the satriya family of Sukawati, and were significant supporters of the village's increasingly renowned arts scene.

Tourism on the island developed after the arrival of Walter Spies, an ethnic German born in Russia who taught painting and music, and dabbled in dance. Spies and foreign painters Willem Hofker and Rudolf Bonnet entertained celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Barbara Hutton, H.G. Wells and Vicki Baum. They brought in some of the greatest artists from all over Bali to teach and train the Balinese in arts, helping Ubud become the cultural centre of Bali.

A new burst of creative energy came in 1960s in the wake of Dutch painter Arie Smit (1916-), and development of the Young Artists Movement. There are many museums in Ubud, including the Museum Puri Lukisan and the Agung Rai Museum of Art.

The Bali tourist boom since the late 1960s has seen much development in the town; however, it remains a centre of artistic pursuit.

The Ubud Palace

The main street is Jalan Raya Ubud (Jl. Raya means main road), which runs east-west through the center of town. Two long roads, Jalan Monkey Forest and Jalan Hanoman, extend south from Jl. Raya Ubud. Puri Saren Agung is a large palace located at the intersection of Monkey Forest and Raya Ubud roads. The home of Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati (1910-1978), the last "king" of Ubud, it is now occupied by his descendants and dance performances are held in its courtyard. It was also one of Ubud's first hotels, dating back to the 1930s.

The Ubud Monkey Forest is a sacred nature reserve located near the southern end of Jalan Monkey Forest. It houses a temple and approximately 340 Crab-eating Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) monkeys.

Ubud tourism focuses on culture, yoga and nature. In contrast to the main tourist area in southern Bali, the Ubud area has forests, rivers, cooler temperatures and less congestion although traffic has increased dramatically in the 21st century. A number of smaller "boutique"-style hotels are located in and around Ubud, which commonly offer spa treatments or treks up Ubud's mountains.

The Moon of Pejeng, in nearby Pejeng, is the largest single-cast bronze kettle drum in the world, dating from circa 300BC. It is a popular destination for tourists interested in local culture, as is the 11th century Goa Gajah, or 'Elephant Cave', temple complex.
